Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Market Perspectives unique?
With so many blogs, websites, and cable TV broadcasts, investment advice can be found for free just about anywhere.  There are many bloggers, pundits, and columnists giving free advice, but what are their credentials?  Do they follow the markets on a daily basis?  Are they able to interpret the message of the markets without overlaying their own opinion, thus slanting their analysis?  For those of us that are dedicated to managing our own portfolio, or those of clients, this type of analysis can prove detrimental to portfolio returns.  The old adage “You get what you pay for” definitely applies.

The Weekly Update service is targeted toward the intermediate term investor that wants to ride trends without excessive trading.  This is a great fit for the trader or investor that wants to be in the market when it is moving higher, and assume a more defensive posture when the market trend turns down.  Subscribers will receive unbiased, objective interpretation of market action, not excessive cheerleading or gloom and doom.  Analysis is focused on WHAT the market did, not WHY it did it.   New stories affect trading every single day and we never know from which direction news will come or how the market will interpret it.  The bottom line is to determine who won the day, whether it be buyers or sellers.  The collective will of the trading community makes up “the market”, and when it speaks, investors need to listen.

What is technical analysis?
Technical analysis is using price performance and volume patterns to help interpret the direction of the market and to make investment decisions. Technical analysis assumes that the day to day market and stock price fluctuations are based on the collective will of the trading community which is often dictated by emotion. One way to identify changes of shifts in investor sentiment is by analyzing the underlying money flows in the market.  Inter-market analysis is a very valuable tool that is often overlooked by those trying to interpret market trends and their strength.  By looking at the flows from one sector into another or one asset class into another we can see changes in the sentiment of the market in many cases before the change shows up in the market indices.

What does the CMT designation represent?
CMT stands for “Chartered Market Technician” as recognized by the Market Technicians Association. The designation of CMT indicates an extensive proficiency in the use of technical analysis for trading and investing. Although many traders claim to use technical analysis, only those with a CMT designation have demonstrated a significant understanding and utilization of technical analysis for investing success. In short, those with a CMT designation should provide a much higher level of confidence in knowledge and understanding of market price behavior.
